Rahul takes blame for UP failure

New Delhi, Mar 6 (IBNS) Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who had put a lot at stake for a good show in Uttar Pradesh, accepted on Tuesday the responsibility of the party's failure in the heartland northern state.
"I take the responsibility. I let the campaign," he told reporters outside the 10 Janpath residence of mother Sonia Gandhi, choosing to face the media as the Samajwadi Party swept the polls in the state winning and leading in 222 seats of the 403 that went to polls.
"Generally there was a mood for Samajwadi Party and it is pretty apparent," he told reporters.
He said organizational weakness in UP cost the Congress.
"Fundamentals of Congress in UP are weak," he said.
He said the result is, however, improvement over the 2007 show (when it got only 22 seats) and he would take it forward.
"We have not done well in whole of UP. I view my work as trying to improve the political system of this country," Rahul said, adding that and there will be victory and defeat in his way.
"I take it in my stride," he said.
Congress can win around 40 seats this time with its alliance as it has bagged 23 seats and led in 17 till 4 pm when the counting was still progressing.
Samajwadi Party has emerged as a clear winner with wins in 115 and leads in 106 at 4 pm.
SP its leader Mulayam Singh Yadav would be the next chief minister.
UP went to polls over seven stages since February to elect 403 legislators to the assembly.
