Mumbai, July 27 (IBNS): The BSE Sensex climbed 1.20 percent on Friday after market sentiment received a boost from the European Central Bank’s signals towards tackling the euro zone debt crisis and a slew of gains in Indian lenders.
The 30-share benchmark index ended 199.37 points higher at 16,839.19 with 23 of its components closing in the green.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 1.13 percent or 56.85 points higher at 5,099.85 on Friday.
Private lenders rallied after ICICI Bank posted strong earnings, even though public sector banks slumped on non-performing assets, while some blue chip stocks recovered sharply on a renewed resolve by the ECB to protect the euro zone from collapse.
