Samsung starts e-learning in Chennai

Sriperumbudur (Chennai), Mar 18 (IBNS) Digital major Samsung India on Thursday announced the inauguration of its second Smile Twin e-Learning Program (STeP) centre in association with Smile Foundation at Sriperumbudur, Chennai.
Dedicated to underprivileged youth , this e- learning center was inaugurated on site by Minister for Labour , Tamil Nadu Government -T M Anbarasan along with H K Chang , Regional Manager-South for Samsung India .
Speaking at the inauguration of the STeP Centre, H K Chang , Regional Manager-South , Samsung India stated, “The e-learning center, which has been set up with the objective of empowering the youth through education and providing them with sustainable livelihood options, will facilitate an all inclusive growth. The Samsung factory is located in Sriperumbudur and this region is very close to our heart.”
The STeP is primarily designed to offer job oriented skills to youth from the less privileged sections of the society living in urban slums and peripheral rural areas. Under the program, training is imparted to these youth in basic computers and retail sales management skills along with proficiency in spoken and written English.
According to a recent survey conducted by Smile Foundation in this region , nearly 80% of the urban slum dwellers and rural population in the target area are daily wagers .
The e –learning center at Sriperumbudur is the second STeP center that the Company has set up, following the setting up of the first center at Noida, U.P in December 2009.
“Currently, Smile Foundation runs 54 STeP centres in India and plans to expand this program further. By 2011 – 2012, we plan to open 100 more centres across India. Many industry leaders in the country have come forward to offer employment opportunities to about 1800 trained students from various centers and nearly 1500 are ready to be absorbed in various roles.” said Pabitra Banerjee, General Manager, Programmes, Smile Foundation.
As a part of the Hope Project, Samsung recently organized the 3rd “Samsung International Women’s Film Festival” in association with INKO centre, Chennai. The festival showcased 175 films from 53 countries and helped build bridges of culture across nations and languages.
