New Delhi, June 28 (IBNS) In recognition of contributions made by (Late) Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of economic planning and statistical development, the Government of India has designated 29th June every year, coinciding with his birth anniversary, as the “Statistics Day” in the category of Special Day to be celebrated at the national level.
The objective of this Day is to create public awareness, specially the younger generation for drawing inspirations from Mahalanobis about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.
The theme of this year’s Statistics Day is “Industrial Statistics”. Concerted efforts will be made throughout the year to bring improvements in the quality of data in this particular field, for objective planning and policy making.
The 6th Statistics Day 2012 would be celebrated all over India on Friday by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, State Governments, Offices of National Sample Survey Organizations spread throughout the country, Universities/Departments, etc. by organizing Seminars, Conferences, Debates, Quiz Programmes, Lecture Series, Essay Competitions, etc.
At national level, main function would be oranized at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on Friday.
The function would be presided by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Statistics & Programme Implementation and Minister of State for Chemicals & Fertilizers, Srikant Kumar Jena and the Chief Economic Adviser, Ministry of Finance, Kaushik Basu will be the Guest of Honour.
National Award in Statistics, constituted in the Honour of Prof. P.V Sukhatme would be conferred on Dr. Jayant Vinayak Deshpande and Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, both eminent statisticians, on the occasion besides Release of Statistical Publications “Millennium Development Goal-India Country Report, 2011” and “India in Figures”.
