Encephalitis kills 251 children in Bihar

Patna, July 3 (IBNS): As many as 251 children have succumbed to encephalitis in Bihar, said health officials on Tuesday.



Bihar's Additional Secretary of (Health) R P Ojha said 172 children have died at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) and Kejriwal Charitable Hospital (KCH) in Muzaffurpur.

At least 63 children died of the disease at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and 11 others at Anugraha Narayan Medical College and Hospital (ANMCH)

He said five deaths were reported from different hospitals in Vaishali district.

The disease broke out in the Indian state in May and a total of 662 children have showed symptoms of the disease so far, a health official said.

Encephalitis is an acute inflammation of the brain. Symptoms include headache, fever, confusion, drowsiness, and fatigue.

More advanced and serious symptoms include seizures or convulsions, tremors, hallucinations, and memory problems.
