India frames policy to provide free generic drugs

India Blooms News Service

New Delhi, July 5 (IBNS): India has put in place a $5.4 billion policy to provide free medicines to its people.

Under the new policy, Indian public doctors will be able to give free generic drugs to patients in city hospitals and rural clinics.

The government had adopted the policy in 2011 though it was not publicized, reports said.

The initial finding for the plan has also been assigned in recent times, media reports quoting unnamed sources said.

The move can be considered to be a significant one in a country where public spending on health was $4.50 per person in 2011.
