Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, Aug 7 (IBNS): The death toll from encephalitis touched 159 in eastern Uttar Pradesh after two children died of the disease on Monday, said health officials on Tuesday.
Both the children died at Gorakhpur's BRD Medical College Hospital.
As many as 838 encephalitis patients who are suffering from encephalitis have been admitted to different government hospitals in Gorakhpur and Basti division of the north Indian state so far, a health official said.
He said that 159 patients have died out of the 838 cases so far.
"So far, 159 out of 838 encephalitis patients have died," said the official.
He said 29 patients, who are suspected of suffering from encephalitis, were admitted in the BRD Medical College Hospital in the past 24 hours.
Encephalitis is an acute inflammation of the brain. Symptoms include headache, fever, confusion, drowsiness, and fatigue.
More advanced and serious symptoms include seizures or convulsions, tremors, hallucinations, and memory problems.
