Kolkata, June 30 (IBNS): More than a thousand people have been affected by an outbreak of chikungunya in three blocks of Jalpaiguri district in past two months, health officials have said.
Nearly 450 people fell ill in past few days alone in the Madarihat, Kalchini and Dhupguri blocks of the district, the officials were quoted as saying.
A medical team went to area and the ailing people have been taken to health centres and hospitals, the added.
Even though the officials did not confirm whether anyone had died of chikungunya, local reports said at least eight people have died due to it in the area during May-June.
Symptoms of chikungunya, that is transmitted to humans by the Aedes mosquitoes, include fever, rashes and body ache.
In rural areas it is usually breaks out due to large areas of stagnated water that gives birth to the larvae.
