Kolkata, Aug 17 (IBNS): Weavers Studio, a design studio for promoting traditional textiles and weaves, unveiled an exhibition of Hyderabad-based label 'Translate' in Kolkata on Friday.
Designers Abhishek Dutta, Sharbari Dutta and Nil, danseuses Priti Patel and Dona Ganguly, and West Bengal Governor’s wife Padmini Narayanan were present at the inauguration.
The exhibition portrays contemporary hand-woven Ikat for men, women and children.
The collection includes sarees, stoles, tunics, dresses, kurtas, and shirts; all in cotton.
Vinita Passary, co-founder of Translate, said, “The textile which we worked with is cotton, keeping the summer season in mind. We have used a special VAT dye which is very much skin friendly and ensure colour-fastness.”
About the colours, she said, “We have used only lightweight cottons in indigo, black, white, grey, ivory, red, maroon and mustard colours.”
On talking about the upgradation of Ikar, Sharbari Dutta said, “The Ikat has been upgraded a lot keeping the traditionality in mind, mostly the colour combination. The dark, undertone colour has been updated, keeping the need of sophisticated customer in mind.”
Nil expressed his thoughts to promote weaves all over India.
The primary focus of ‘Translate’ is to revive the age-old art of Ikat, bringing it to a larger audience through weaving, designing, producing and retailing.
The exhibition will be on till Aug 25.
