Hundreds of eggs, believed to be those of the fierce Carnosaur and the herbivorous Sauropod were recently discovered by research students of Periyar University, Salem. The eggs lie buried over a 2 sq km area in a river bed at Senthurai village in Ariyalur. Latest reports said, policemen have been deployed at the site to check the 'looting' of eggs.
“We are unable to stop the plundering of the dinosaur eggs. Students from Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Karnataka have been digging for the eggs over the last few days,” said scientist Mu Ramkumar of the Salem-based Periyar University. "Each egg or egg cluster may provide a unique insight into the life and extinction of the dinosaur species," head of the School of Geo-Sciences at Bharathidasan University, K Kumarasamy, said.
The fossils earlier lay about seven feet below the surface. They came to the surface of the stream bed when water eroded the sand.
