Shillong, April 20 (IBNS) Meghalaya on Tuesday got its 22nd chief minister in less than four decades of existence when Mukul Sangma was sworn in by Governor RS Mooshahary, after DD Lapang quit following loss of ‘majority’ to Sangma.
Sangma, the fourth chief minister in the same assembly in two years in the hill state, was administered the oath of office, along with three other MLAs, at a function at the Raj Bhavan, on the day he celebrated his 45th birthday.
Among the youngest chief ministers of the country, Sangma rose to the top post in the state after Lapang, once a ‘heavyweight’ in Congress circles, was forced to resign on Monday after it became apparent that he had lost ‘majority’.
At least 21 Congress legislators have pledged ‘unconditional support’ to Sangma, while 14 among them have been pursuing the Congress high command for nearly one month asking for change of leadership as well as their inclusion in the ministry.
The current ruling Congress alliance enjoys the support of 44 legislators- 28 from Congress, 9 from United Democratic Party (UDP), two from Hill State Peoples Democratic Party, one from Khyun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement and four Independents in the house of 60.
