NCHAC scam: Assam govt reacts to Mahanta's comment

Nagaon, June 22 (IBNS) The CBI probe into the Rs 1000 crore North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) scam is being looked upon as the top issue in Assam politics.

Assam’s main opposition political party Asom Gana Parisad (AGP) has decided to resort to a series of agitation beginning from June 23 across the state in demand of a 'free and fair' probe into the multi-crore scam, AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary told IBNS.

The regional party demands immediate intervention of President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to bring all departments of North Cachar Hills under the purview of the national investigation agency.

Former Assam CM and leader of AGP Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said, “We have urged the Centre to ensure free and fair inquiry in Rs 1000 crore NCHAC scam. It is being politically influenced. Now Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is showing himself as clean image. He is now raising other issues sidestepping the main issue of multi-crore scam”.

“We have got several documents, which reveal seven cabinet ministers of Tarun Gogoi-led Assam Government are involved in the multi-crore scam,” he added.

Mahanta added, “We have got all the tapings of ministers and CBI officers telephone conversations.”

Meanwhile, Assam Forest Minister and state government spokesperson Rockybul Hussain has reacted over the Mahanta’s comment.

During a press conference in Nagaon on Monday he said, “We will demand a high level inquiry over the telephone taping.”

“Mahanta does not have the authority to tap for any person’s telephone conversation,” Hussain said.

Reacting to Hussain's statement, AGP president Patowary said, “If his seven cabinet ministers are not involved in the Rs 1,000-crore scam, why is Gogoi apprehensive of fair inquiry into the misappropriation of public funds in all the departments of North Cachar Hills?”

On the other hand, Assam CM Tarun Gogoi said the Assam government will move the CBI to reopen the Rs. 400-crore Letter-of-Credit (LOC) scam in the Veterinary Department and investigate the “prima-facie case” against the former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.
