Two CMs in Meghalaya? Oh, yes!

Shillong/New Delhi, Jan 31 (IBNS) In a curious development, Meghalaya now has two chief ministers. The Congress ruled state has given Chief Minister status to its state party chief.
An official press release recently said the Meghalaya government has promoted Dr Friday Lyngdoh, who is the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president, to the rank of the chief minister.
The present chief minister of Meghalaya is Dr D Lapang.
"The rank and status of Lyngdoh has been upgraded from the rank of deputy chief minister to that of chief minister. He shall continue to function as political advisor to the Chief Minister," an official notification said, according to media reports.
While the move is seen as an effort to quell dissidence in the party in the northeastern state, Congress spokesman Manish Tiwari told a TV channel: “I don’t think constitutionally it is impermissible. There is a chief minister and another has been given the rank of chief minister.”
Tiwari, however, did not rule out a debate on the matter of propriety on the issue.
