CP shootout: SC upholds lifer for cops

New Delhi, May 2 (IBNS) The Supreme Court on Monday upheld life-term for all 10 policemen, including Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) SS Rathi, accused of shooting dead two businessmen here in 1997.
A bench of Justices H S Bedi and C K Prasad on Monday dismissed their appeal against the Delhi Court verdict.
Rathi and nine cops- Inspector Anil Kumar, Sub-Inspector Ashok Rana, Head Constables Shiv Kumar, Tejpal Singh and Mahavir Singh and Constables Sumer Singh, Subhash Chand, Sunil Kumar and Kothari Ram-had moved the apex court against the Delhi High Court verdict that sustained their conviction and life sentence in Sept 18, 2009 in the ‘fake encounter’ case.
In Oct 24, 2007, the trial court had found them guilty of killing of two Haryana-based businessmen.
On March 31, 1997, Rathi and his team shot dead Pradeep Goyal and Jagjit Singh due to ‘mistaken identity’ at Connaught Place (CP) here.
