Mumbai, Sept 3 (IBNS): The main runway at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport remained closed till late Saturday night, following Friday’s incident when a Turkish aircraft veered off it, as passengers continued to face delays.
The main runway of the airport, which is currently functioning with its secondary one, was expected to open at 12 noon, media reports said. However, even by 10:30 pm the runway remained closed.
The runway was closed off on Friday when a Turkish Airlines plane that landed early morning veered off the taxiway and got stuck in mud.
Last reports said that the runway could open at 11 pm as the work for removing the aircraft was hampered due to rains.
All people on board Flight No TK720, that landed shortly after 4 am with about 97 passengers, were safe as a major mishap was averted, officials said.
Turkish Airlines said that the incident had occurred due to “excessive rainfall”.
Meanwhile a SpiceJet plane on Saturday had to make an emergency landing at the airport due to technical snag, said airport officials.
According to airport officials, SpiceJet flight SG 344, that was flying from Bangalore, went for an emergency landing at 12:21pm on Saturday.
All 137 passengers and crew on the plane are safe, said officials.
