CP encounter: MHA to pay compensation

New Delhi, July 4 (IBNS) The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to pay a compensation of Rs 15 lakh each to the families of businessmen Pradeep Goyal and Jagjit Singh, who were killed in the 1997 fake encounter at Connaught Place (CP).
The MHA will pay the compensation to the families in six weeks.
The Supreme Court on May 2 upheld life-term for all 10 policemen, including Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) SS Rathi, accused of shooting dead the two businessmen here.
Rathi and nine cops- Inspector Anil Kumar, Sub-Inspector Ashok Rana, Head Constables Shiv Kumar, Tejpal Singh and Mahavir Singh and Constables Sumer Singh, Subhash Chand, Sunil Kumar and Kothari Ram-had moved the apex court against the Delhi High Court verdict that sustained their conviction and life sentence in Sept 18, 2009 in the ‘fake encounter’ case.
In Oct 24, 2007, the trial court had found them guilty of killing of two Haryana-based businessmen.
On March 31, 1997, Rathi and his team shot dead Goyal and Singh due to ‘mistaken identity’ at Connaught Place here.
