Aligarh, July 8 (IBNS): Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi walked nearly 60km in his pro-farmer march to reach Aligarh from Noida and on the fourth day of the walk on Friday he said he has learnt more from the ground than in Lok Sabha.
Gandhi, who covered more than 20 villages and spend nights in villages, addressed farmers, sat with them in the Panchayats and heard their views on land acquisition.
Rahul Gandhi's route is dotted with the villages where farmers had to give up land for the Yamuna Expressway and grievances over payment of compensation led to violence earlier in Bhatta-Parsaul village which was Rahul's first stop in the march.
He spent the night at Marorgarhi village while the Padyatra, which is in its last leg, will culminate in the farmers' "Mahapanchayat" here on Saturday.
He said he could understand the ground realities from the villages since the problems cannot be gauged sitting in New Delhi or Lucknow.
Earlier on Thursday there was tension when a man with a firearm was spotted near the Uttar Pradesh march of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi by his securitymen on the third day of his Padayatra.
The man was caught by the Special Protection Guard (SPG) of Rahul at Jikarpur village near Aligarh. He was handed over to police.
Seen as a major effort to drum up farmers' support ahead of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh next year, Rahul Gandhi defied the raps and muscle flexes from Chief Minister Mayawati’s government.
Taking on Mayawati, on Thursday Rahul said UP is being run by dalals (middlemen and brokers).
The Uttar Pradesh administration used tough words against Gandhi's padyatra, calling it a "clear violation" of the prohibitory orders and said his arrest would depend on how the situation evolves, but the Congress poster-boy rallying for a good show in state polls next year, seemed undeterred.
