Srinagar, Feb 28 (IBNS) Terming the last summer’s street protests as unfortunate, Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N Vohra on Monday stressed the importance of Indo-Pak dialogue to bring back peace in the region.
While starting the Budget Session in winter capital, Vohra regretted the loss of lives in the “unfortunate” stone throwing protests of last summer.
More than 110 people, most of them youngsters, were killed by security forces while tackling the stone throwing protesters during the four months of unrest since June 11 last year.
Governor said that for the maintenance of peace in Kashmir, the Indo-Pak dialogue was necessary.
He also stressed for the reorientation of security forces to implement SOP(standard operating procedures) so that no further loss of life takes place.
He reiterated that the government was "committed to zero tolerance towards human rights
violations."
His address was heard in rapt attention by legislators, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and opposition Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti, who were seated at two extreme ends of the front row of the Central hall of the legislature where members of both houses gathered for the joint sitting.
