"The Tribunal has confirmed MHA declaration of SIMI as an unlawful association. The Tribunal pronounced its order on August 1, 2012," said a Ministry of Home Affairs statement on Friday.

SIMI was for the first time declared an unlawful association on September 27, 2001, it said.

"The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) vide Notification dated 3rd February, 2012 had declared SIMI an unlawful association with immediate effect for two years, under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, said the statement.

"As per provision of the said Act, a tribunal consisting of Justice V.K.Shali, a sitting Judge of Delhi High Court was constituted to adjudicate whether there is sufficient cause for declaring the association unlawful," it said.
