Chennai, June 8 (IBNS): Former Telecom Minister A Raja on Friday reached Chennai after languishing in Tihar jail for more than a year in connection to the 2G spectrum allocation scandal.

Around 2000 Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) workers were present at the Chennai airport to welcome Raja.

He is likely to visit the DMK headquarters in Chennai on Friday and meet party supremo M Karunanidhi.

Raja visited Tamil Nadu on Friday after a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on June 6 gave permission to the 2G scam accused minister to visit his home state.

He was released on bail from the Tihar jail last month.

The court said Raja can visit Tamil Nadu on the grounds that he will not contact any witness of the 2G scam.

The court gave him the permission to visit Tamil Nadu between June 8-30 as it will remain closed for summer vacation from June 9-30.

The court on May 15 granted bail to Raja who was languishing in the Tihar jail for 15 months in the 2G case.

However, the court had said Raja cannot leave Delhi without its permission.

Raja, who was arrested in 2011 for his alleged role in the scam, had applied for bail in the court on May 9.

Touted to be the biggest corruption scandal of independent India, the 2G scam, allegedly masterminded by Raja, pertains to a biased distribution of mobile airwaves and operating licenses, in lieu of kickbacks, to telcos that could have cost the treasury up to Rs 1.76 lakh crore in lost revenue, according to the government's auditors CAG.
