Panaji, July 10 (IBNS): Dissent within the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition in New Delhi over Pranab Mukherjee’s Presidential nomination will work in favour of his opponent P A Sangma, a BJP leader said Tuesday.
P A Sangma is supported by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other regional parties across the country, he said, unlike with the UPA candidate, who does not have the backing of Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC).
“Though on paper, the presidential poll seems to be tilted, in the churning scenario, you never know what is going to happen. The ball has set rolling,” BJP national spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters referring to differences in the UPA.
The BJP leader also referred to Union Minister Salman Khurshid’s remarks that the Congress was lacking ideological direction. Kurshid later clarified his statement in the national media.
“The election has become a churning point in the Indian politics,” Javdekar, who is campaigning for Sangma in Goa, said.
“Everyone will vote as per conscience. I feel, after hearing everybody that the history of 1969 will certainly be repeated…The election for the first time is being taken so seriously,” the spokesperson added.
The MPs and legislators from the BJP and its alliance partners have pledged full support to NDA nominee.
