Chennai, Aug 12 (IBNS) The Madras High Court has given a go-ahead to the M Karunanidhi-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party to hold a meeting on the support for Sri Lankan Tamils at the YMCA ground.
In a special sitting on Sunday, the division bench of Justice Elipe Dharmarao and Justice M. Venugopal stayed the order of the Chennai Police that had denied permission to hold the meeting of TESO (Tamil Eelam Supporters' Organisation), bringing a big reprieve for the DMK and its leader Karunanidhi.
The court, however, put some conditions.
City police had rejected the permission to hold a meeting of the TESO under the aegis of the DMK at the YMCA ground and that had forced the party to shift it to a city hotel on Sunday.
While police said it was not permitted for security reasons, earlier the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had disapproved of the word Eelam in the nomenclature of TESO.
Later MEA allowed its usage but warned of not expressing anything that questions of the sovereignty of Sri Lanka.
Recently, former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi announced a revival of the TESO which was originally founded in 1985 to support Sri Lankan Tamils.
