New York, July 14 (IBNS): Wikipedia, the popular community-edited online encyclopedia, needs an overhaul of its appearance in order to attract a wider base of editors and diversify its content, a growing number of users of the website say.
The site, that was launched in 2001, is still listed among the top 10 websites on the Internet however is becoming old and dowdy, say some users even as there are those who want to keep it that way.
Amidst the proponents of the classic look of Wikipedia, there were also a significant number of ardent users at the 'Wikimania' event held in Washington held over the past week, who said the site needs upgrading.
The website, with its disregard for the kind of design aesthetics that make social media websites like Tumblr and Facebook immensely popular, does indeed make it look 10 years old and makes it cumbersome for users to contribute to it, said one of the attendees.
The future direction of Wikipedia, though, will be in the same manner the website operates – collaboratively, Jimmy Wales, the Wikipedia founder who is still the public face of the project, said.
“I'm not the boss of Wikipedia, you are all the bosses,” he said at the the opening session of Wikimania at George Washington University on Thursday.
