Kolkata, July 15 (IBNS): United Progressive Alliance (UPA)'s Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee has finally written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee seeking her support for his win in the election.
While Mamata Banerjee has ruled out supporting Pranab Mukherjee's candidature earlier, the latter in a letter on Sunday wrote: The President stands above party politics. Given an opportunity, it shall be my endeavour to protect the values of this office: integrity, impartiality and the promotion of 'Sarva dharma sambhav' which constitute the essence and spirit of our Constitution."
Mamata Banerjee, who was unhappy with Mukherjee and piqued at being denied a loan interest repayment moratorium from the Centre, had raised the name of A P J Abdul Kalam for the post, though the latter refused to contest.
While Pranab Mukherjee's rival candidate P A Sangma has sought the support of Mamata Banerjee, she has not yet made clear who Trinamool would root for, or if the party would abstain from voting like some left parties.
Apart from UPA, the JDU, Shiv Sena, CPI(M), Forward Bloc, SP, BSP, RJD, JD(S) and LJP of Paswan and a host of smaller parties like Naga National Front of Nagaland and Bodo Peoples Party have supported Pranab's candidature.
The Presidential election is scheduled for July 19.
