New Delhi, Aug 16 (IBNS): A Delhi court on Thursday remanded businessman Abhishek Verma and his wife to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody till August 21 in connection to a forgery case.
The forgery case was lodged against the couple on Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken's complaint.
Verma and his wife Anca Maria Neacsu were sent to the CBI custody after the probe agency said the couple was needed for custodial interrogation.
Verma and his wife were arrested on a new forgery case on August 8, just minutes after they were granted bail by Delhi court in a case over allegedly taking kickbacks for misusing their influence.
The CBI arrested Verma and his Romanian wife in the court of Special CBI Judge Sanjeev Jain itself, soon after the couple were granted bail in the corruption case.
The duo had been arrested for an alleged bid to influence unknown officials to stall a government’s move to blacklist a Swiss arms firm.
In the forgery case, the court remanded him back to judicial custody for a day.
It had granted bail to Verma and his wife as the CBI failed to file a chargesheet against them so far.
The court directed Verma and Ancia to furnish a bail bond of Rs 10 lakh each and two sureties of the same amount.
The CBI has filed an application and sought for the formal arrest of the accused in a fresh First Information Report (FIR).
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also filed an application for the arrest of Verma and his wife.
The ED had on June 18 registered a case against Verma under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for allegedly taking $530,000 from Swiss arms company Rheinmetall Air Defence AG (RAD) to keep it out of the government’s blacklist.
Verma and his wife were arrested by the CBI on June 8.
According to reports, the money from the Swiss firm to Verma’s front company Ganton India and Ganton USA. Out of the $530,000, around $80,000 were transferred into Ganton India's accounts, reports said.
