New Delhi, June 17 (IBNS): Former Lok Sabha speaker and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader P A Sangma on Sunday said he has appealed to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for supporting his candidature in the Presidential election.
Informing that he is not opting out of the race yet, Sangma said: "I have talked to Mamata Banerjee day before yesterday and last evening. I have appealed for support."
However, reports said Mamata Banerjee has not yet shown any inclination to support Sangma and stuck to her choice- A P J Abdul Kalam.
She even launched her Facebook account to begin with appeal for supporting Kalam.
"I gave voice to what millions of Indians want to see in a President. My Party is a small party. We are not a big party with none of the resources others possess. We are led by truth and conviction," wrote Mamata in support of Kalam, calling him a seeker of truth.
A divided National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Sunday failed to arrive at a decision on their presidential election candidate or supporting UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee.
The meeting at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP leader LK Advani's house was attended by leaders like Sushma Swaraj and Jaswant Singh besides JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav.
After the meeting Sharad Yadav told reporters that the NDA leaders would discuss further before arriving at a consensus.
"We will have another meeting and take a decision," he said.
While some NDA partners like Janata Dal (United) are in favour of supporting United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Pranab Mukherjee, others are in favour of a contest.
Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Naveen Patnaik is in favour of supporting former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma. Sangma is also a candidate of AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa.
However, Trinamool Congress, which is in UPA but virulently opposes Pranab Mukherjee's candidature, is not in favour of supporting Sangma and wants to only back A P J Abdul Kalam.
