Panaji, Aug 18 (IBNS) The Goa Police on Saturday convened a meeting with people of Northeast (NE) origin advising them not to pay heed to rumours that they will be targeted.
Thousands of people from the northeastern states are employed in different sectors in the state like casinos, hotels, beauty parlous and security agencies.
The police spokesperson said that the northeastern residents have been apprised that misleading information is being circulated via SMSes and social networking sites that they will be attacked.
“Goa Police appeals the people from the northeastern states to discard such rumours and misleading posts. We will protect you all,” the spokesperson said.
“We are with you (northeastern people). There is no need to panic,” the police said.
The telephone numbers of the respective police stations and the police inspectors were shared with the people of Northeast origin.
“Contact us anytime you feel threatened or in case of emergencies,” the attendees were told.
Police teams have begun patrolling the places and establishments to ensure that the northeastern people are safe.
Fear-stricken NE people in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune are fleeing back to home towns.
The situation in Goa is however peaceful as of now.
