New Delhi, June 25 (IBNS): Presidential candidate PA Sangma's daughter and Union minister Agatha Sangma has said that several political parties are backing her father for his qualities and not for the fact that he belongs to tribal community.
"I think lot of leaders from the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and BJD (Biju Janata Dal) have supported him not only because he is from the tribal community or someone who is a representative from of the minority community but as someone who has been a prominent Speaker and minister," Agatha told reporters on Sunday.
Sangma will be contesting the upcoming Presidential poll against United Progressive Alliance (UPA)'s candidate Pranab Mukherjee.
The BJP on June 21 announced the former Lok Sabha Speaker as their candidate for the titular post.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik have also backed Sangma as Presidential candidate.
The Presidential election will take place on July 19.
