New York, June 26 (IBNS): Popular social networking site Facebook has named Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sheryl Sandberg as a member of its Board of Directors, media reports said on Tuesday.
Sandberg is the first woman director in the social networking company's eight-member board.
Facebook made the announcement on Sandberg's new position on Monday.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement: "Sheryl has been my partner in running Facebook and has been central to our growth and success over the years."
"Her understanding of our mission and long-term opportunity, and her experience both at Facebook and on public company boards makes her a natural fit for our board," he said.
She served as the Chief Operating Officer of the social networking site since 2008.
She oversees the firm's business operations including sales, marketing, business development, human resources, public policy and communications
Prior to Facebook, Sandberg was Vice President of Global Online Sales and Operations at Google.
She also was involved in launching Google's philanthropic arm Google.org.
Prior to Google, Sandberg served as chief of staff for the United States Department of the Treasury.
