New Delhi, June 26 (IBNS): United Progressive Alliance (UPA)'s Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday submitted his resignation from the post of Finance Minister to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in order to contest the upcoming election.
The senior Congress leader met Singh at his 7 Race Course Road residence in the national capital to submit his resignation.
An emotional Mukherjee spoke to media on his last day at the office on Tuesday and said he is 'ready to embark on a new journey'.
"Friends in the media I know you have many questions to ask me. But today, on my very last day in the ministry, it is not the time to open any new dialogue," he said while addressing the media for the last time as the Union Finance Minister.
"Today, I stand ready to embark on a new journey," he said.
"I feel honoured and humbled on my nomination as a candidate to contest the Presidential election by UPA-II," he said.
"Standing on the brink of such an honour, I also feel a tinge of sentiment at the thought of leaving behind my life as a political activist spanning over four decades," he said.
Mukherjee said he will miss his Finance Ministry colleagues.
"I will miss my colleagues in the Ministry of Finance," he said.
Mukherjee said: "Friends, I have traveled a distance in my life. But I always remind myself that I was born in a remote village in Bengal. I saw the lives of poor farmers and simple folks in rural India."
"I know that not every decision which I have taken might have been right. But I have taken those decisions by keeping in view the interests of people whose faces appeared before me more than often," he said.
Mukherjee will file his nomination for the upcoming Presidential poll on June 28.
The Presidential election is scheduled for July 19.
