Assam violence: Toll at 54, panel files report

Guwahati, July 28 (IBNS): The death toll from Assam's ethnic clashes rose to 54 on Saturday even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited the worse affected Kokrajhar district and announced and announced a relief package of Rs 300 crores for the victims.


Two bodies were found at Duramari village in Kokrajhar district on Saturday, officials said.

Meanwhile, the team of all parties of Assam Legislative Assembly, who had visited the affected areas of BTAD, submitted a report and made recommendations to the the state government to control the overall situation.

"We had submitted a report to the state government and recommended some points," Asom Gana Parishad MLA Keshab Mahanta said.

On Friday, the team had discussed with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at his official residence at Koinadhara and submitted the report.

"We have find out some biased government officials, who worked in the BTAD area and recommended to the state government to take action against those officers," a member of the team said.

Meanwhile, the army was deployed in different areas in Baska district on Saturday.

Five districts of lower Assam, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baska, Dhubri and Bongaigaon were badly affected in the clashes.

A government official said that, curfew in Kokrajhar, Dhubri and Chirang district had relaxed during the day, but it continued in night.

Over four lakhs people were sheltered at 270 relief camps in five districts.
