Updated extradition pact with Nepal awaits formalities

New Delhi, Mar 10 (IBNS): The updated extradition treaty between India and Nepal, initiated in January 2005, is still awaiting formal signatures.
With a view to strengthen the institutional legal arrangements for effectively combating crime and terrorism in tune with contemporary realities, India and Nepal initialed an updated Extradition Treaty in January, 2005. It is awaiting formal signatures, informed SM Krishna, Minister of External Affairs, in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
The Government has regularly taken up the matter of early signing of the updated Extradition Treaty with the Government of Nepal, including during the visit of the Minister of External Affairs to Nepal in January, 2010 and their confirmation is awaited, he added. India and Nepal had signed an Extradition Treaty on October 2, 1953, which remains in force.
