New Delhi, March 17(IBNS): Four men accused of being involved in the double murders of TV journalist Soumya Vishwanathan and IT executive Jigeesha Ghosh, were slapped with Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
Earlier only the main main accused Ravi Kapoor, who was involved in the murder of cab driver Nadeem two years ago, was slapped with MCOCA.
All the accused were produced before ASJ S K Sarvaria, after five days in special custody ended Monday.
This was the second time in a week that the south district police have invoked MCOCA.
Earlier this week self-styled godman Shiv Murat Dwivedi, who was allegedly running a sex racket, having been booked under the act too.
Police slapped them with MCOCA after it was found that the accused had amassed wealth through organised crime. The joint commissioner of police (Southern Range) had given permission to lodge a case under MCOCA on April 2009.
“We have traced transactions worth Rs 29 lakh to Sethi’s. Baljeet’s account also shows transactions worth Rs 8 lakh, Shukla Rs 87 lakh while Ajay Kumar over Rs 21 lakh. It was a perfect case for us to slap MCOCA against the accused,’’ said a senior official.
The court also remanded the accused in judicial custody till March 29, since the police didn’t want to further their custody.
Police sources also said that Kapoor would be appeared in court handcuffed and it will not be revoked soon. The decision was taken after the accused tried to escape from Safdarjung Hospital.
The police also told the court that the confessional statement of the main accused Kapoor, before the area DCP, had named his accomplices — Baljeet Singh, Amit Shukla, Ajay Sethi and Ajay Kumar — as being involved in the crimes.
