New Delhi, Aug 14 (IBNS) Union Minister for Tribal Affairs and Panchayati Raj V Kishore Chandra Deo felicitated Olympic bronze medal winner boxer Mary Kom here on Tuesday.
He honoured Mary with a cash award of Rs. 10 lakh.
Speaking on the occasion, Deo said that Mary, who belongs to a tribal family of Manipur, made India proud by winning the bronze in Women’s Flyweight Boxing at the London Olympics.
He further said Mary is a beacon for thousands of girls belonging to the tribal communities and aspiring to achieve greater heights.
Mary Kom, a five-time World Boxing champion, is the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.
Also ranked No. 4 in the AIBA World Women’s Ranking Flyweight category, she was the only woman boxer from India to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Mahadeo Singh Khandela and Secretary of the Ministry Vibha Puri Das were also present on the occasion.
