Calicut Stadium renamed in CM's honour By M.M. Jafar Khan
Calicut, Dec 31 (Indianfootball.com-IBNS): The Municipal Corporation Stadium in Calicut has been renamed to EMS Stadium as a tribute to the first Chief Minister of Kerala.
Calicut's Municipal Corporation Stadium which is playing host to Viva Kerala's I-League matches has been officially renamed as EMS Stadium. The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation decided to rename the stadium as a tribute to the first Chief Minister of Kerala and the Communist leader late E.M. Sankaran Namboodiripad.
There were plans to rename the stadium five years back when State Bank of Travancore was hosting their National Football League matches at the ground, but due to protests the name of the stadium wasn't renamed in the name of the late legendary Olympian Abdul Rehman and then proceedings were kept on halt.
But the corporation now decided to rename the stadium after pressure from the Malappuram football fans as it is the birthplace of E.M. Sankaran Namboodiripad.
