Noida, July 6 (IBNS): Indian opener Virender Sehwag on Friday said it was a good team that helped India to win two World Cups and not just captaincy.
He said a good team and a strong leadership by skipper MS Dhoni helped India win both T20 and 50-over World Cups.
"We won World Cup because we had a very strong team which was ably backed by Dhoni’s leadership,” Sehwag told reporters during an event here on Friday.
"Dhoni got a very strong team," Sehwag said.
"When you get a strong team, it is easier to perform well," he said.
He said the entire country will miss Sachin Tendulkar during the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
Tendulkar has been rested for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour.
Sehwag said the iconic Indian batsman should be allowed to pick the series he 'wants to play'.
"One should realise that he is 39 years and he should be allowed to pick and choose which series he wants to go," he said.
The All India Senior Selection Committee met on Wednesday in Mumbai to pick the Indian team for 5 ODIs and 1 T20 to be played in Sri Lanka where Sehwag and Zaheer Khan were named in the limited overs-squad.
India's cricket captain MS Dhoni will be leading his team to play 5 ODIs and one T20 in Sri Lanka in July-August, said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday.
Virat Kohli has been named the vice-captain of the Indian side.
