MIAL distributes 100 solar-powered lanterns in tribal areas of SGNP

Mumbai, May 27 (IBNS): GVK CSIA, the company that manages Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd. (MIAL) on Wednesday announced distributing 100 solar-powered LED lamps to the tribal inhabitants residing at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).

The initiative will immensely help the tribals, who ironically even though residing in such close proximity to a metro city like Mumbai, never had access to electricity till now. The LED lamps will also help the tribals fend off the threat from big cats such as Leopards who literally make a killing of the livestock and human life in such areas due to the darkness.

The initiative is also expected to benefit the young tribal children to pursue their studies during evening hours.

Till now the tribals who have meagre access to the necessities of life used kerosene-fuelled lamps which is not feasible over long-term due to economic implications to these households.

Narendra Hosabettu – Head, Environment, GVK CSIA commented, "We are extremely pleased to be part of this initiative that forms part of our social responsibility focus. We are also thankful to the authorities at SGNP for giving us a chance to be part of this initiative. In fact, the first step towards the initiative was put forward by the RFO, SGNP to MIAL, to help with the solar-powered lamps to avert threat from wild animals.”

The 100 solar LED lamps were presented in tribal areas in a formal function on May 26, 2015 at Tumni Pada village that falls on the way to Kanheri Caves Road. Mr.Suresh Thorat, IFS, PCCF and Mr. Vikas Gupta, IFS, Director and CCF, SGNP were also present for the function.

GVK CSIA and SGNP alliance has been working together since many years now. GVK CSIA has planted over 8000 trees in SGNP.

The latest initiative is part of GVK CSIA’s larger objective to work towards inclusive growth achieved by meaningful sustainable initiatives. Towards this few of the recent initiatives successfully executed by the firm include hosting a Rose-show, planting unique species of plants outside the new T2 terminal, creating a green wall inside the Departures area of the terminal. MIAL’s CSR focus recently received global acclamation as well when it received the prestigious   Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 3 optimization accreditation honour by the International agency, Airport Council International.
