More landslides in Uttarakhand, Char Dham remains cut off

India Blooms News Service | | 17 Jul 2014, 01:26 pm
Dehradun, July 17 (IBNS) Heavy downpour continued in Uttarakhand triggering more landslides and halting the Char Dham yatra, said reports on Thursday.

Several rivers like Mandakini and Alakananda are flowing close to the danger marks while authorities said alert has been sounded and pilgrims were evacuated.

Lambagarh, Chirobagadh and Vijaynagar in Chamoli district reported landslides.

Reports said Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway as well as the  Kedarnath-Gaurikund road remained blocked by landslides, said reports.

Earlier, the pilgrimage and tourist movement to Char Dham has been suspended owing to heavy landslides and rain.

Roads to all the four dhams or pilgrim sites- Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath- were blocked owing to the calamity.

Uttarakhand witnessed devastating "Himalayan Tsunami" last year killing many and also wiping out habitations. Even the area around the Kedarnath temple was wiped out.

Char Dham  are the names of four pilgrimage sites in India that are widely revered by Hindus.
