Cyprus President meets Indian PM, four agreements exchanged

New Delhi, Apr 28 (IBNS): President Nicos Anastasiades of the Republic of Cyprus, who is on his first State visit to India at the invitation of President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed President Nicos Anastasiades at the joint press conference saying that the President of Cyprus is a great friend and strong supporter of India.

PM Modi said that Cyprus and India have influenced each other through the millennia and India's founding father have supported the the freedom struggel of Cyprus, according to media reports.

The Prime Minister said India firmly supports the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Cyprus.

Prime Minister Modi also commended the Cyprus President for leadng a new era of peace, development, and security.

Cyprus has successfully overcome its recent financial and banking challenges, the PM said. Cyprus recorded one of the highest growth in Euro zone, the PM added.

Referring to their discussions, PM Modi said, "The President and I agreed that India offers excellent investment opportunities for Cypriot entrepreneurs."

The PM pointed out that Cyprus and India enjoy close economic ties; Cyprus is the 8th largest investor in India.

He also said, "Beautiful landscape of Cyprus and wide horizons of Incredible India can be sources of tourism promotion in both countries."

PM Modi appreciated Cyprus's support for India’s claim for a permanent seat in an expanded UN Security Council, media reports said,

The PM said, " We agreed on the need for all countries to decisively act against states that support, shelter and sustan violence factories in our regions."

Earlier in the day, the two leaders witnessed the exchange of four agreements after delegation talks and working luncheon.

The four agreements are Executive Programme on Culture, Education and Scientific Cooperation for 2017-2020; Work Plan under programme of Cooperation in Agriculture for 2017-2018; Merchant Shipping Agreement; and Air Aviation Agreement.
