I am not conditioned by mega serial logic as a film hero: Abir

Kolkata, Jan 12 (IBNS): Tollywood hot property Abir Chatterjee, whose screen portrayals as the thinking Bengali detective story sleuths or the guy next door IT professional endears him to the discerning Bengali film audience, says he can take regular breaks from his work and need not come up before the audience too frequently like a mega serial actor.

"In a mega, a story has to be told on every single day as it follows a different format and pattern. I am not working in any mega and hence there is no pre-condition attached that I have to come before the audience every year as a hero," Abir told IBNS at the promotional of Byomkesh Pawrbo.

"May I be not misunderstood. I have nothing against mega serials but I only believe an actor should not sign a film just to make regular appearances before the audience," Abir said.

"In 2014-15, 12 of my films were released while in 2016 first two months Monchora and Bastushaap hit screens of which the second one got nominated to the IFFI in 2016. Again at the end of 2016 from Thammar Boyfriend to Byomkesh Pawrbo and then in early 2017 you will see me in Ami Joy Chatterjee. So going by your question, was the gap too long!!! No, I don't look at it that way," Abir said.

"Sorry I am not sold to the idea that to be in fray you have to be in a new film almost every month," he said.

About competition to Byomkesh from 'Double Feluda' and then 'Kiriti Roy', Abir said, "I need not be bothered about what others do. I need not think. So long I am sure and confident about my own work."

"Of course I have great respect to actors like Sabyasachi Chakraborty and Chiranjeet Chakraborty and their works as well," he said to another question. While Sabyasachi was brought back as Feluda by Sandip Ray, Chiranjeet was cast in Kiriti Roy, running in the houses around the same time.

Describing Arindam's Byomkesh (in borth Har Har Byomkesh and Byomkesh Pawrbo) as much more cinematic and larger than life than Anjan Dutta's Byomkesh series for big screen in past, Abir confirmed he had professional rivalry with Jisshu Sengupta, who had been cast as Byomkesh in Anjan's last two films on the iconic sleuth including Byomkesh O Chiriakhana.

"I am no one to compare between mine and his portryal but I think my characterization had been more layered and communicated the sense of moral honesty and belief in truth more forcefully," he said.

"Jisshu had definitely done a very good job as well," Abir said.

Coming to the upcoming Ami Joy Chatterjee (AJC) by Manoj Michigan, Abir said "I am the principal character who is ruthless but committed."
