Gurkirat Singh clinches Royal Juniors Open 2015

India Blooms News Service | | 21 May 2015, 11:17 pm
Kolkata, May 21 (IBNS): Overnight leader Gurkirat Singh strolled home to a four stroke victory at the Royal Juniors Open 2015 on a day when extreme weather conditions could allow only fourteen holes to be completed at the Par 72 Royal Calcutta Golf Club here. He finished with a gross of six-over par 133 to beat city mate Rajvir Randhawa who came in second place with a gross of 137.

Md Rohit dropped a place from his overnight second place to third after a disappointing nine-over 64 for the day and was followed by Gurshaan Singh Grewal a further stroke behind at a gross score of fourteen-over 141.

Gurkirat, who started off from the first tee, began with a birdie but was back to even-par for the day with a bogey on the third. A birdie 4 followed on the fourth but dropped strokes on the sixth and the seventh holes ruffled him a bit as he took the turn at two-over par for the day. The extreme heat was clearly getting better of him as he made bogey on the twelfth hole and a double bogey 6 on the fourteenth hole before play was called off. His effort was however good enough to register a comfortable four stroke victory.

“It was very tough out there with the heat and the high humidity but it was a good test of my stamina.” Remarked Gurkirat. The local lad added, “However, I’m delighted to complete this win to kickstart my season.”

Pinku Das took home the Category C title by a stroke with a gross of 160 pushing overnight leader Kaushal Bagrodia into second place followed by Souvik Nayak , who was placed third a further stroke behind.

Category D was decided by a playoff as Garv Lakhani emerged victorious on the first playoff hole after being tied with Suveer Kapoor at a gross of 166. Gurmehr Bindra completed the podium places six strokes behind.

In the Girls’ event, Aashera Sethi pipped Sushnata Deb by a stroke in the A&B combined category while Chitrangada Singh registered a comprehensive win over Smriti Bhargavby fourteen strokes. Tanisha stayed clear of the chasing pack as she claimed the Category D title.
