Kolkata to host 42nd KC Mahindra All India School Regatta

Kolkata, June 6 (IBNS): Lake club Kolkata in association with Mahindra will host 42nd KC Mahindra All India School Regatta 2014 from June 8 in Kolkata.

It will continue till June 15.

About three hundred students from over sixty schools will be participating in the week-long championship in two categories that include senior and junior for both boys and girls.

Former cricketer Sambaran Bannerjee, Grand Master Dibyendu Barua, Actress Soumili Biswas, Subrata Guha and Debabrata Dutta Jt. Secretary, Lake Club Kolkata and Kalyan Sarangi, Convener of the regatta were present during the announcement of the event on Friday.

Introduced in 1973, the event has gained national recognition by the Rowing Federation of India and is one of the oldest and the largest rowing events in Asia, with the widest participant base of rowers.

Students from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Maharashtra, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Punjab, Karnataka and West Bengal will be competing in the championship.

The rowing will be held on two 500 metres lanes in Rabindra Sarovar in Kolkata.

Subrata Guha, Jt Secretary, Lake Club, Kolkata said, “The regatta dates back to 1973, making it one of the oldest schools, and now the largest, rowing event in Asia. It brags a wide participant base with school rowers from throughout India taking part. Raced over 500m, many of the rowers are new to the sport, some of them coming in with one month rowing experience. This opportunity is open to all students of any back ground till the age of 25. We hope we would host a spectacular event this time too.”
