British MP 'apologises' for Gaza tweet

India Blooms News Service | | 24 Jul 2014, 01:12 am
London, July 23 (IBNS) British MP David Ward, who had triggered a controversy by saying that he would fire a rocket at Israelis from Gaza, has apologised for his comments.

In a statement   released by the Liberal Democrats subsequently, the MP said:" utterly condemn the violence on both sides in Israel and Gaza."

"I condemn the actions of Hamas, and my comments were not in support of firing rockets into Israel. If they gave the opposite impression, I apologise," he said.

A spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats said in the statement: "This is a categorical apology from David Ward. In light of this apology, the party and the whips will decide in due course if further disciplinary action should be taken."

Triggering a controversy, Ward had earlier tweeted: "The big question is - if I lived in #Gaza would I fire a rocket? - probably yes."

In the past 15 days, at least 649 Palestinians and 31 Israelis have been killed since the fighting started.
