External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday extended India’s full backing to Brazil’s presidency for a successful and outcome-oriented COP30.

Jaishankar announced the development after meeting President of COP30 Amazonia and former Ambassador of Brazil to India André Aranha Corrêa do Lago.

Jaishankar wrote on X: "Glad to meet André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, President @UNFCCC @COP30Amazonia and former Ambassador of Brazil to India."

"Extended India’s full support to Brazil’s presidency for a successful and outcome - oriented COP30," he said.

What is the COP?

The COP is the supreme decision-making body of the Convention. All States that are Parties to the Convention are represented at the COP, at which they review the implementation of the Convention and any other legal instruments that the COP adopts and take decisions necessary to promote the effective implementation of the Convention, including institutional and administrative arrangements, as UNFCCC website.

India and Brazil share a very close and multifaceted relationship both at bilateral level as well as in plurilateral fora such as BRICS, BASIC, G-20, G-4, IBSA, International Solar Alliance, Global Biofuel Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilience Infrastructure as well as in the larger multilateral bodies such as the UN, WTO, UNESCO, and WIPO.

The two countries have been Strategic Partners since 2006.

The bilateral relationship is based on a common global vision, shared democratic values, and a commitment to foster economic growth with social inclusion for the welfare of the people of both countries.
