After backlash over Kashmir tweet by Pakistan dealer, Hyundai India says measure taken to remove the post

New Delhi/IBNS: After #BoycottHyundai started trending on Twitter over a "Solidarity with Kashmir" tweet by Hyundai's Pakistan dealership, the company in India has issued a fresh statement, stating that it doesn't comment on political or social issues in any region and the statement on Kashmir made by the independently-owned distributor in Pakistan has been removed.

"As a business policy, Hyundai Motor company does not comment on political or religious issues in any specific region. Therefore, it is clearly against Hyundai Motor's policy that the independently-owned distributor in Pakistan made unauthorized Kashmir-related social media posts from their own accounts," the South Korean carmaker said on Tuesday.

The controversy was triggered after a Twitter handle named @hyundaiPakistanOfficial posted, "Let us remember the sacrifices of our Kashmiri brothers and stand in support as they struggle for freedom."

The matter has continued to escalate and several netizens called for a mass boycott cancelling bookings of Hyundai cars.

Assuring proper action against the "unauthorized social media activity, Hyundai said the distributor had "misused" its brand identity.

"Once the situation was brought to our attention we made the distributor acutely aware of the inappropriateness of the action.

"We have since taken measures to ensure the distributor, which misused the Hyundai brand identity, has removed the social media post and we have put in place processes to prevent a future recurrence," it said.

Distancing itself from the Kashmir-related comment made from the Twitter handle @hyundaiPakistanOfficial, the multinational firm said its Indian subsidiary is not associated with the distributor in Pakistan.

"Our subsidiary Hyundai Motor India is not associated with the distributor in Pakistan and we strongly reject the distributor's unauthorized non-business-related social media activity."

Reiterating its commitment to Indian customers, the company expressed regret for any offense caused.

"Hyundai Motor Company has been investing in India for many decades and remains strongly committed to Indian customers. We deeply regret any offense caused to the people of India by this unofficial social media activity," the statement read.
