Hyderabad: National Geophysical Research Institute has discovered significant deposits of 15 rare earth elements (REE) in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district, TOI reported on Tuesday.

Following a survey of non-traditional rocks like syenites in Anantapur, the scientists of the Hyderabad-based organisation found the host minerals.

The major REE identified were allanite, ceriate, thorite, columbite, tantalite, apatite, zircon, monazite, pyrochlore euxenite and fluorite.

REE of the lanthanide series are of great importance in many electronic devices like cellphones, televisions, computers, automobiles used daily and in various industrial applications, the report said.

Earlier, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) had reported the discovery of an approximate reserve of 5.9 million tonnes of lithium in Reasi district of Jammu & Kashmir. Lithium is a vital mineral required to produce electric vehicles and solar panels.

Lithium was not available in India before and the country was 100 percent dependent on imports of this critical mineral.

According to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, India could potentially become the world's leading manufacturer of electric vehicles if it can use the newly found reserve of lithium in Jammu and Kashmir.
