New Delhi, Aug 26 (IBNS): The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) aims to provide appropriate information regarding agriculture at local level and makes an important contribution by giving knowledge to farmers about advanced agriculture through organising various training programmes.

This was stated by Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh while laying the foundation stone of KVK at district Ramgarh in Jharkhand on Tuesday.

Greeting the people on this occasion the Minister said with the opening of this KVK the state of Jharkhand will have KVKs in all its 24 districts. Out of them 16 KVKs are working under Birsa Agriculture University, Ranchi, 3 under various institutes of ICAR and 5 KVKs under NGOs, he said.

Singh expressed the hope that Ramgarh district, which is largely dependent on agriculture, will be provided important agricultural information by this KVK to all its 351 revenue villages. He called upon the KVK that it should work for rehabilitation of areas facing threat of soil erosion because of coalmines.

The KVK should develop such model as may help in improving the sources of livelihood of the local public, he added.

Singh mentioned that in entire eastern region and particularly in the States of Jharkhand, Chhatisgarh, Odisha and Assam, only rice cultivation is done and very limited area is covered by rabi crops. He expressed the hope this Kendra would work extensively on rice cultivation, production of fruits and vegetables and mushrooms so that people of Ramgarh district may get benefited by availability of seeds of vegetables of high quality.

Ramgarh district should be known as a model district in respect of vegetables, horticulture in the State of Jharkhand, he added.

Dr. S. Ayyappan, DG, ICAR and senior officers of ICAR and State Government of Jharkhand were also present on this occasion.
