Big Boost for Mizoram: First-ever automobile rake reaches Sairang Railway Station
Sairang Railway Station in Mizoram has handled its first-ever direct inward automobile rake, carrying 119 Maruti cars from Changsari near Guwahati, marking a significant milestone in the state’s rail-linked logistics development.
Calling the movement historic, Indian Railways said it would enhance vehicle availability in Aizawl, reduce dependence on long-distance road transport, and provide a boost to Mizoram’s automobile ecosystem, including dealers, service providers and customers. “This marks a significant step in the state’s infrastructural and economic development,” the Railways said in a statement.
The development comes against the backdrop of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, a major infrastructure achievement for Mizoram. Built through challenging terrain, the 51.38-km-long line passes through 45 tunnels and plays a crucial role in strengthening the region’s connectivity.
“This railway line plays a very important role in supporting the region’s strategic integration with the rest of the country,” Indian Railways said.
The line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, when he flagged off the Rajdhani Express between Aizawl (Sairang) and Delhi (Anand Vihar Terminal), the Mizoram Express between Aizawl (Sairang) and Guwahati, and an Express train between Aizawl (Sairang) and Kolkata. The launch marked Mizoram’s full integration into India’s national rail network.
According to Indian Railways, passenger response to the new services has been encouraging, with high occupancy levels recorded. The Sairang–Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express has been running at 147% occupancy, the Sairang–Guwahati Mizoram Express at 115%, and the Sairang–Kolkata Express at 139%.
Freight operations on the Bairabi–Sairang line began shortly after its inauguration. The first freight movement, on September 14, 2025, carried 21 wagons of cement from Assam to Aizawl. Since then, the route has transported a range of essential commodities, including cement, construction materials, automobiles, sand and stone chips.
The first parcel consignment from Sairang was booked on September 19, 2025, when Anthurium flowers were transported to Anand Vihar Terminal via the parcel van of the Sairang–Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express. Between September 17 and December 12, 2025, a total of 17 rakes were handled on the route.
These developments underscore the Bairabi–Sairang line’s emergence as a reliable logistics corridor, helping lower transportation costs and support Mizoram’s economic and infrastructural growth.
