Indian govt approves ₹37,216 cr fertiliser subsidy for kharif 2025 under NBS scheme

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved nutrient-based subsidy (NBS) rates for phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilisers for the Kharif 2025 season, covering April 1 to September 30.

The decision aims to keep essential fertilisers affordable for farmers while ensuring a steady supply.

The government has earmarked ₹37,216.15 crore for the subsidy, marking an increase of about ₹13,000 crore compared to the budgetary requirement for Rabi 2024-25.

The subsidy will enable farmers to access P&K fertilisers, including NPKS grades, at controlled prices.

Additionally, the existing freight subsidy on single super phosphate (SSP) has been extended.

The move supports balanced nutrient application, contributing to soil health and improved agricultural yields.

The government emphasised that the subsidy approval underscores its commitment to the agriculture sector and Indian farmers.

Under the NBS scheme, subsidies will be disbursed to fertiliser manufacturers and importers at approved rates, stabilising prices for farmers.

Currently, India subsidises 28 grades of P&K fertilisers under this scheme, in effect since April 1, 2010.

Taking into account global price fluctuations in key fertiliser inputs like urea, DAP, MOP, and sulphur, the Centre has factored in recent trends to ensure price rationalisation.

The approval of revised NBS rates is expected to secure fertiliser availability while strengthening the country’s food security.
