Kolkata hosts North East ASEAN Business Summit

Kolkata, Apr 8 (IBNS): Northeast India has great potential for development and could well become the growth engine that will give the next big push to the Indian economy.

The Northeast could be transformed into an economic corridor connecting India, Myanmar, Bangladesh and the ASEAN countries. 

The benefits of such transformation would be multifaceted, impacting not only India but the entire sub region, paving the way for integration of India’s North east with the economic mainstream.

Within the fascinating and fabulous environment of NER, it is said that rich potential wealth of mineral resources are lying untapped, ready to be exploited for the benefit of the people. 

The major mineral resources are coal, glass sand, limestone, lignite, natural gas, bauxite, Uranium, Chromium, Copper, Gold, Manganese, Graphite, Gypsum, Sapphire and Zinc. Most of the accounted mining industries in the northeastern region are located in the states of Assam and Meghalaya. Assam is known for its petroleum and natural gas reserves, coal, limestone and minor minerals; Meghalaya has established coal and limestone mining industries. Manipur is endowed with occurrences of limestone, nickel, copper, lignite, dimension stones and minor asbestos. However, there are challenges north eastern states face in exploring the natural resources.

In order to unleash the potential, Indian Chamber of Commerce along with Ministry of DONER, Government of India and Government of Manipur has organized North East ASEAN Busiess Summit on 7th and 8th April at City Convention Centre, Imphal, Manipur.

The Chief Guest who graced the occasion was Tofail Ahmed,  Minister, Ministry of Commerce, Government of Bangladesh The other key dignitaries on dias  were O Nabakishore Singh, Chief Secretary, Manipur K S Kropha, Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, Govindas Konthoujam,  Minister, Department of  Commerce and Industries, Government of Manipur, Th Lokeshwar Singh,  speaker of Government of Manipur, Naveen Verma, Secretary, Ministry of DoNER, Government of India and Shiv Siddhant Kaul, President, Indian Chamber of Commerce

The conference witnessed participation of 140 delegates, speakers and investors from different parts of the country and from different countries outside Manipur.

Tofail Ahmed,  Minister for Commerce & Industry, Government of Bangladesh and the Chief Guest of the summit started with the trade figures with India which has gone up considerably from 500 billion USD to 576 billion USD over a period of 5 years. 

He also thanked Government of India for waiving of the duty and quota on all exported items of Bangladesh.
